Practical planning / Common questions

Before You Redesign

Good questions make a stronger starting point than a finished moodboard. These answers help you identify the next decision—and when that decision belongs with a qualified local professional.

Where should an indoor-outdoor redesign begin?

Begin with daily use, circulation and exposure. Observe sun, wind and rain before choosing finishes or opening up a wall.

Write down what currently feels uncomfortable and what you want to do more often. Our open architecture guide turns those observations into a useful design brief.

Can the same flooring continue inside and outside?

Sometimes, but the exterior product and finish must suit wet use, climate and installation conditions. A visually continuous threshold still needs drainage and waterproofing design.

Related materials can provide continuity without forcing the same finish into two very different environments.

Is weathered timber always damaged?

No. Colour change can be normal surface weathering. Soft areas, persistent damp, loose fixings and significant splintering need investigation rather than being dismissed as patina.

Check the care requirements for the species and finish. Do not coat over a problem before understanding its cause.

Can natural rattan stay outdoors?

Only if the specific product is rated for the actual exposure. Many natural rattan pieces need dry, protected conditions and should not remain in persistent damp.

Check frames and cushions separately. Read our material study before treating a sheltered terrace like an interior.

Can I put an outdoor grill beneath a pergola?

Only when the appliance instructions, structure and local requirements permit the complete installation. Roofs, slats and screens can introduce fire and ventilation risks. Obtain qualified advice.

Never use an outdoor-only combustion appliance indoors or in an enclosed space. See the outdoor kitchen guide for planning questions, not installation instructions.

How can a small terrace feel like a room?

Choose one main use, leave a clear route and provide comfortable seating with suitable shade. A pair of chairs and a small table may work better than a large sofa.

Test the arrangement with what you already own before ordering substantial furniture.

Does a pergola provide rain protection?

An open-slatted pergola generally filters light rather than providing a weatherproof roof. Verify the exact system, drainage, wind limits and installation requirements.

Plant cover changes over time and should not be assumed to provide reliable waterproofing.

Are natural materials automatically sustainable?

No. Consider sourcing, transport, treatments, service life, repairability and disposal. Ask for specific evidence rather than relying on a broad natural or green label.

A durable, repairable product you can care for may be a better fit than one chosen solely for its raw appearance.

When should I involve a professional?

Seek qualified advice before structural changes, new service installations, significant drainage or level changes, and permanent shelter work. Local permissions and product requirements vary.

Raise accessibility, trees, boundaries and ongoing maintenance early rather than treating them as finishing details.

Does this website offer individual design approvals?

No. We publish general editorial information and can receive editorial questions. We do not provide site assessments, regulated design services or installation approvals.

You can prepare a space question without uploading plans or submitting personal details through a web form.
